How Game Reserve Fencing Works
Large wildlife is held back by a combination of physical structure and a strong electric deterrent. Comprehensive game fences in Kenya typically stand around 2 m high with 8–10 or more strands, and are kept at a high standing voltage — conservation fences aim for around 8 kV — so that even elephants turn back.
Elephants learn to break posts rather than touch wires. Outriggers — live wires on brackets standing off the main fence — and short 'trip' fences in front keep them away from the posts. Mesh buried below ground stops warthog, porcupine and predators digging under.
Long fence lines are powered by high-output energizers in secure energizer houses, usually on solar with large battery banks, and divided into sections so a fault in one doesn't take down the whole line.
Section monitors report voltage drops to fence attendants or a control room. Regular patrols, vegetation clearing and fast repair after animal breakages keep the fence effective — a game fence is only as good as its maintenance.
System Capabilities
Comprehensive Multi-Strand Fence
Tall fences with closely spaced live and earth strands, designed for the species on each side of the line.
Elephant Outriggers
Offset live wires that keep elephants away from posts, where they would otherwise lever and break them.
Short Front Fences
Low electrified fences in front of the main line at breakage hotspots, adding a second deterrent.
Buried Mesh Skirts
Mesh or wire extending below ground to stop burrowing animals and predators digging under.
Energizer Houses & Solar
Secure, ventilated energizer houses with high-output energizers, solar arrays and battery banks.
Gates, Grids & Crossings
Vehicle gates, elephant grids and wildlife crossing points designed into the alignment.
Benefits of Automation
- Keeps wildlife in protected areas and out of farms and settlements.
- Reduces crop raiding, livestock loss and human–wildlife conflict.
- Supports anti-poaching by controlling access to the reserve.
- Engineered for elephant pressure, not just general livestock loads.
- Off-grid solar power keeps remote lines live day and night.
- Section monitoring speeds up fault finding over many kilometres.
