How Livestock Electric Fencing Works
Livestock quickly learn to respect an electric fence after a few contacts, so it works as a psychological barrier rather than a purely physical one. That means fewer, lighter posts and wires than a conventional fence of the same effectiveness.
Strand number and height are set to the species: a few strands for cattle, more closely spaced low strands for sheep, goats and pigs, and tight spacing near the ground to stop predators and dogs.
The energizer is sized to the fence length and vegetation load. Sheep and goats need a stronger shock because wool and hair insulate them, and long grass touching the wires drains power, so sizing matters.
Permanent boundary fences can be combined with portable polywire or tape for strip and rotational grazing. Alarms or a fence monitor warn you when the voltage drops so animals don't learn the fence is off.
System Capabilities
Species-Specific Design
Strand heights and spacing set for cattle, dairy cows, sheep, goats, pigs, horses or poultry.
Predator-Proof Bomas
Low, closely spaced live strands around night enclosures to deter hyena, jackal, leopard and dogs.
Rotational Grazing Cells
Permanent boundaries plus portable polywire and reels to subdivide pasture and rest paddocks.
Treated Timber or Steel Posts
Economical treated eucalyptus for long runs, steel where animal pressure or theft risk is high.
Correctly Sized Energizers
Mains or solar energizers with enough output for the fence length, species and vegetation.
Gates & Water Points
Insulated gate handles, underground crossings and safe layouts around troughs and dips.
Benefits of Automation
- Keeps livestock contained and out of crops and roads.
- Reduces losses to predators, stray dogs and stock theft.
- Cheaper per metre than conventional woven or barbed-wire fencing.
- Makes rotational grazing practical, improving pasture use.
- Humane and non-lethal for animals and people.
- Solar options suit farms far from the grid.
