Keeping an Electric Fence at Peak Performance: A Maintenance Guide
Mervonn Fencing18 February 2026 Maintenance

Vegetation, corrosion, loose strands and earthing faults quietly degrade an electric fence. A simple maintenance routine keeps voltage where it should be.
Why Fences Weaken Over Time
A fence that read 8 kV at commissioning can drop to 3–4 kV within a year without maintenance. The usual causes are vegetation growing into the line, corroded joints and connectors, strands that have gone slack, and earth rods that have dried out or corroded.
A Practical Routine
- Monthly: walk the line, clear vegetation touching the strands, check the energizer's fence voltage reading against its commissioning value.
- Quarterly: test voltage at the far end of each zone with a fence tester, tighten slack strands, inspect insulators for cracks and tracking.
- Annually: inspect and, if needed, water or extend the earth system; check all joints and connectors; test the alarm output and battery backup.
What a Maintenance Contract Covers
Our maintenance clients get scheduled visits on this cycle, a documented voltage log per zone, priority parts supply, and 24/7 emergency call-out for a fence-down alarm. For most sites that is the difference between a fence that deters and one that only looks like it does.
